In Centerton, Arkansas, a new company is changing how builders approach construction. Velent Steel Structures opened in January 2025, combining innovative technology, sustainable building practices, and strategic planning to make an immediate impact in the regional construction market.
Owner Kyle McGuire brings a unique background to the construction industry, transitioning from a successful career in data process automation and real estate to steel structure manufacturing. His journey from concept to an operating business was supported by the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center (ASBTDC) at the University of Arkansas.
Kyle came to us through a referral from his banker, Itzel Meador at First Security Bank,” said Catherine Corley, ASBTDC innovation and business consultant who worked with McGuire. “We provided comprehensive market research and helped him develop a solid business plan that formed the foundation for his success.”
The partnership with ASBTDC proved crucial in securing financing. Corley and McGuire developed a strategic financing approach that, combined with his personal investment, resulted in approval for a Small Business Administration loan that launched the venture.
McGuire emphasizes that steel construction offers significant advantages over traditional wood framing, though the benefits require education to overcome initial cost concerns. While steel materials carry higher upfront costs, projects can be completed in 40% less time that wood framing. “Education is the key to converting builders and developers to steel,” McGuire notes. The upfront cost is higher for materials but the long-term savings are substantial.”
In addition to the durability factor, the steel structures are non-combustible, immune to termites and mold, and insurance costs are lower. The trusses can withstand winds up to 170 mph and the lifespan of the steel frame is over 300 years. There is also minimal waste – 1% to 2% compared to 10% for wood – and the precise manufacturing eliminates measurement challenges. Each pre-formed panel is marked for easy assembly, reducing the need for skilled labor and overall project costs.
Velent’s process begins with architectural designs that are converted into detailed 3D models showing every stud and beam. After approval, the designs are engineered and submitted for proper structural stamps, ensuring each project meets rigorous safety standards. The sections connect as trusses, joists, and wall framing, creating structures that are straight, maintenance-free, non-toxic, and grounded against electrical storms.
Just months after opening, Velent Steel Structures is demonstrating the viability of McGuire’s vision. The company is meeting initial revenue projections and has achieved cash-flow positive status – a significant milestone for any startup.
For Corley, watching Velent’s growth has been professionally rewarding. “It gave me greater insight into construction and innovative new steel materials,” she reflects. “I always appreciate the opportunity to learn new things!”
As the company continues to expand its reach across Arkansas and beyond, it represents more that just another construction business. The potential for innovation to solve real-world problems creates sustainable economic opportunities in local communities.
