Collaboration within the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Northwest Arkansas led Dan Burnett of Burnett Transit Care to the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center at the University of Arkansas. James Bell, VP for Economic Development at the Greater Bentonville Chamber of Commerce, introduced Burnett to consultant and ASBTDC director Mary Beth Brooks for assistance with his new business venture.

A native of Northwest Arkansas, Burnett and his family returned to the area several years ago. Following a career in sales, he knew that he wanted to provide a service-related business that would help the NWA community. Burnett and his family experienced firsthand the need for a service to provide non-emergency medical transportation during his late father’s treatment for cancer.

A first-time business owner, Burnett gained a greater understanding of what it takes to start a business and the amount of effort to build and grow one. Working in concert with Brooks, they built financial projections, created a business plan and developed a financial package that could be presented to lenders.

Critical components provided to Center clients include superior market research, a comprehensive marketing guide, plus a wide variety of trainings for small business owners and entrepreneurs. The team currently aids Burnett with marketing and social media strategy, including a concise Google Business profile.

Looking back, Burnett stated that he was new to the health care business and noted that he learns something new every day. “I wish I had known about ASBTDC and the services the Center offers sooner,” he said. “I could have done more industry research and been more prepared in that regard.”

Burnett believes that he has found his passion for serving others and growing a business that is a necessity for Northwest Arkansas.

“ASBTDC can help get your business started, help grow the business you may already have, and help get the word out so that the community knows what type of goods and services your business offers,” said Burnett.
