For many small business owners, the pandemic ushered in many changes and new challenges. Human resources issues impact small business today more than ever before. If you have questions about HR responsibilities for your small business, watch the University of Arkansas’ Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center, in collaboration with the greater Bentonville Area Chamber of Commerce, panel discussion recording, linked under resources in our website.

In summary, here are 5 key takeaways from the HR Panel Discussion.

1. What to think about when acquiring talent:

When you are looking to hire someone new, know what specific qualities you are searching for. An easy way to do this is to look at who was previously in that role. What qualities of theirs worked in that position? Which could be improved upon?

2. How to set yourself apart as a business:

Know that every human wants to be a part of something – cater towards that. Ensure that your employees feel seen as individuals as well as a key part of the team. Also, understand that not every job is for every person and not every person is for every job.

3. Take time on your onboarding process:

Allow each new member time to bond with the team to ensure that they feel welcome. Along with the social aspects of onboarding, also take the time to train them efficiently so that they are better equipped to do their job.

4. How to avoid conflict:

Be clear what your standards are. Be proactive when conflict starts to arise. Discussing conflicts before they develop further prevents future problems from arising.

5. Simplifying your information:

More information does not always mean more transparency. Simplify the information that you are providing to your employees to ensure that they have a clear understanding that what you are telling them is key.
